Infertility
There are a number of reasons as to why couples experience infertility.
It was long believed that infertility was solely a female problem, however we’ve now discovered that among couples who are infertile, about 40 per cent are exclusively due to female infertility, 40 per cent exclusively to male infertility, and ten per cent involve problems with both partners. In the remaining ten per cent, the cause is unknown.
There are two different types of infertility, structural and functional.
Male Structural Infertility can include blockages in the tubes that transport sperm, a damaged urethra or undescended testicles.
Female Structural Infertility can include a blockage of the fallopian tubes, ovarian cysts or congenital defects.
Male Functional Infertility can include impotence, hormonal imbalances or sperm motility.
Female Functional Infertility can include irregular menstrual cycles, ovulation problems or hormonal imbalances.
If you have been trying to conceive naturally with no positive results for over 12 months it is important to get a thorough medical examination to determine any possible structural issues causing infertility.
Acupuncture is particularly helpful for those that have a functional rather than a structural reason for infertility.
Young couples who don’t have any structural problems should consider trying acupuncture before other more expensive fertility treatments. Acupuncture may be preferred over common infertility drugs or treatments, as not only does it have fewer side effects, Acupuncture treatments can also help prevent miscarriage once you do become pregnant. Studies have also shown that women who receive Acupuncture infertility treatments also have lower rates of ectopic pregnancies.
We look at the broader picture and all aspects of your health, identifying the cause to this concern. Everyone is different but the bottom line in fertility remains the health of the individual.
Infertility and Acupuncture
Acupuncture to support reproductive health is becoming an increasingly popular and successful form of fertility treatment, whether as an individual treatment or as a strong support to Western Fertility treatments.
According to traditional acupuncture theory, there are twelve energy channels called “meridians” running vertically along the length of the human body, each one linking to a specific organ. Health issues are caused by obstructed energy flow at certain points along the meridians. Acupuncture therapy stimulates meridian flow and harmonises the body’s energy to influence the health of both body and mind.
In order for fertility to be successful your body must be balanced. The energy of your body controls our development, ageing, and reproduction. While naturally the chances of fertility decreases with age, acupuncture treatments can strengthen your body’s energy and therefore improve your ability to conceive.
In our clinic, we believe Acupuncture treatments with the additional support of advice and supplements you can improve blood circulation throughout the body and help stimulate and balance the body’s hormones.
For women the ability to regulate blood flow to the ovaries and uterus and to lower stress levels is a key part of reproductive health. Acupuncture also be very effective at regulating a women’s endocrine system and subsequently her reproductive system. As her estrogen and progesterone levels become balanced, her uterus will prepare for implantation. Treatment can also improve the function of the ovaries, leading to better quality eggs and embryos. Along with sperm quality and motility, increasing the chances of conception.
Once your body is regulated, it’s common to also experience the alleviation of other conditions including menstrual disorders, PMS signs and symptoms, endometriosis and other sources of pain and discomfort.
When the cause of infertility is unknown, Acupuncture can be the best treatment as there are many subtle reasons which may be the cause of infertility and Acupuncture are able to treat both the mind and body at subconscious levels to address these reasons.
There are many causes of infertility, including deficiencies in lifestyle and diet, the effects of stress and possible conditions. To use a metaphor: as any farmer knows you must till the soil, look after it well and provide the right nutrients for the seed to take root and flourish. Fertility in both the male and female is no different.

Acupuncture has also been shown in several other studies to have significant advantages for In Vitro Fertilization (IVF) treatments. Surprisingly these studies have shown that the Acupuncture infertility treatments increased the successful rates of IVF treatment regardless of the age of the woman. Some people also believe that Acupuncture helps women to stay relaxed during stressful fertility treatments which can often enhance the success of the treatments.
Statistics

- Fertility problems strike one in three women over 35.

What is involves?
Our fertility services include not only acupuncture treatment, but also access to herbal treatment as well as diet and nutritional advice.
Our Acupuncturist, Dr Sarah Arkell, is a professional Doctor of Chinese Medicine.
Acupuncture is a safe and effective natural therapy that is used to heal illness, prevent disease and improve well-being. Tiny, hair-thin needles are inserted into specific points in the body, where they are gently stimulated to trigger the body’s natural healing response.
Acupuncture needles are not much thicker than a human hair, most people find the insertion of needles is surprisingly comfortable and that they become deeply relaxed after the needles are inserted. In some cases, you will not know the needles are in place.
How many treatments will I need?
Acupuncture and IVF – it is best to have a 6 week course of Acupuncture treatments prior to starting your IVF cycle, then continue treatments during the stimulation phase, on the day ofembryo transfer, before and after the procedure if possible and one week after embryo transfer.
If you are trying to get pregnant naturally, we recommend Acupuncture treatments weekly for 3-4months.
When you do successfully become pregnant, continuing your acupuncture and naturopathy treatments will help to maintain and promote a healthier pregnancy.
Our fertility treatments involve minimal risks.
In this day and age with stress and overwork playing a key role in our ability to function to our optimal level it’s essential to give yourself every advantage in this precious journey.
