Acupuncture

What is Acupuncture?

Acupuncture is amongst one of the oldest forms of healing, having originated in China more than 3,000 years ago. It is a healing therapy that enables the body to restore balance and to stimulate its innate ability to heal itself. Acupuncture involves the insertion of very thin sterilised needles into energy points around the body. The needles are thinner than a human hair, making treatment relatively painless.
Depending on what condition you are coming in for your Acupuncturist may also use Cupping, Spooning (Gua Sha) and massage.

Cupping involves suction being created by placing a glass cup on the part of the body to be treated. The air inside the cup is heated and the rim is then applied to the skin, forming an airtight seal. As the air inside the cup cools, it contracts, forming a partial vacuum and enabling the cup to suck the skin, pulling in soft tissue and drawing blood to that area.
Spooning, also known on Gua Sha, involves repetative stroking motion with a spoon over your muscles. This helps move stagnated blood, and increase circulation to the area. Both Cupping and Spooning may leave marks on your skin, however they should clear within a few days.

Our Acupuncturist also has some amazing equipment that she may use during your session, including Electo-Acupuncture and Acugraph.

Electro-acupuncture will be used in some cases to help stimulating the affected area or/and distal meridian points. This involves connecting small clips to the acupuncture needles to attach to a device that generates continuous electric pulses. The frequency and intensity of the electric impulses are adjusted according to the conditions being treated. This can enhance traditional acupuncture treatment and is especially beneficial for musculoskeletal problems and weight loss.
Acugraph is an advanced tool for Acupuncturists that gives both the practitioner and client greater insights into the patients health and wellbeing. Acugraph involves your practitioner collecting data electronically by placing cotton swab probes on different acupressure points around the body. This is non invasive and painless. The probes send electronic signals to a computer program that graphs information about your bodies energy, imbalances, and provides recommended treatment plans and herbal supplementation. It also provides a great base line, so you can see the benefits of your treatments in graph form.
