Articles on Acupuncture and Back Pain

Back pain is one of the main reasons people seek Acupuncture treatment. Often extremely painful and debilitating it can cause severe disruption to a persons life. Loss of work hours, inability to get around and in cases of chronic back pain anxiety and depression all contribute to a decrease in quality of life.
The good news is that Acupuncture can help relieve back pain associated with a number of causes.

Muscle sprain/strain

Muscle sprain is one of the most common causes of back pain and can be caused by bad posture, trauma, injury and overwork.

The spine is supported by large muscles called the paraspinal muscles. These muscles both support the spinal column as well as the weight of the upper body. The five lumbar vertebrae are connected by tough ligaments that help to maintain the position of the spinal column.

These muscles, ligaments, and bones all work together to provide control and strength for nearly all activities. The lumbar spine and its muscles are needed for most all movements and activities. For this reason, the lumbar spine is prone to injury, and when an injury has been sustained, we are prevented from performing many activities.

Disc Herniation

Each disc of the spine is designed much like a jelly donut. As the disc degenerates from age or injury, the softer central portion can rupture (herniate) through the surrounding outer ring This abnormal rupture of the central portion of the disc is referred to as a disc herniation.

The most common location for a herniated disc to occur is in the disc at the level between the fourth and fifth lumber vertebrae in the lower back. This area is constantly absorbing the impact of bearing the weight of the upper body. This is especially important when we are standing or sitting. The lower back is also critically involved in our body’s movements throughout the day, as we twist the torso in rotating side to side and as we hinge the back in flexion and extension while bending or lifting.

Acupuncture when performed as early as possible has been shown to rapidly improve recovery time and ease associated symptoms that may occur as a result of disc herniation. Swelling, pain, improved mobility and increased recovery time may all occur while receiving Acupuncture.

Pre and Post Op Surgery Care

In the vast majority of sufferers, spinal surgery is only considered after a long course of conservative therapy. Back pain often takes quite some time to resolve. Therefore, rushing into spinal surgery may not be the best idea.

It can take many months for the patient to fully heal after surgery, and he or she may, in the end, suffer permanent loss of flexibility.

Acupuncture can help you pre- surgery to aid you to recover more quickly and post surgery to aid in pain reduction, increased mobility, reduction in scar tissue and an improved sense of wellbeing.

Sciatica

Sciatica is a term used to describe pain that extends down into the buttocks and leg which comes from an irritation of a larger nerve in the lumbar spine called the sciatic nerve. Sciatica can accompany sprains, strains, herniated discs as well as back pain emanating from other sources.

This very painful and debilitating condition is treated by looking at what is causing the Sciatica and looking to correct the underlying source.
