Pregnancy

Firstly, let us assure you that we don’t believe that pregnancy is a ‘condition’ as such. Pregnancy is natural and normal but it can certainly have an affect on the body and mind.

We have a range of therapies that can enhance your pregnancy journey so that you are more comfortable, energetic and prepared.

Pregnancy Acupuncture

Acupuncture is a wonderful, non-invasive way to treat many condition that pop up during pregnancy.

What can it treat?

  • Anaemia
  • Anxiety
  • Constipation
  • Depression
  • Fatigue
  • Headaches
  • Heartburn
  • Haemorrhoids
  • Morning Sickness
  • Pain (sciatica, backache, pelvic girdle pain etc)
  • Sinusitis
  • Stress

Birth Preparation Acupuncture Package

This is a series of four treatments on a weekly basis, starting from week 36, to prepare the body for labour. Treatment includes acupuncture, cupping and gentle massage. Common conditions occur during pregnancy such as sciatica, backaches, pubic and joint pain which can also be addressed. Acupuncture points are customized to the mother’s constitution, presenting conditions and pregnancy history. These include points to ripen the cervix, to help position the baby in the best presentation for labour and to promote optimal energy and stamina for women to enter into labour.

If the baby is born before the four sessions are used up then the remaining sessions can be used for postpartum treatments. Acupuncture can restore a mother’s energy levels after the stress of birth and alleviate depression and anxiety, relieve backache, perineal pain and many other forms of discomfort.

Acupuncture for Breech Babies

Between 29 and 32 weeks, 15% of all babies will be in a breech position. This means that the baby is presenting with its buttock, knees or feet pointing down, essentially poised to come out bottom first. Only 3-4% of these presentations will stay in this position until labour.

If you are 29 weeks or more and your health professional has confirmed your baby is in the breech position, you should seek Acupuncture treatment. At this stage there will be time and space to move the baby. Ideally you would receive two treatments around 3-4 days apart and then weekly until your baby turns.

If it is left any later than 37 weeks getting the baby to turn could be problematic as there is not enough room for the baby to move.

The practice of Moxibustion using Moxa Sticks is also used. Moxa is herb that has been dried and shaped into a stick, which can then be burnt. Moxa will be applied to a point on your little toe. Your Acupuncturist will show you where this point is so that you can use it at home also. The Moxa will feel warm but it is not applied directly to the skin so it will not burn you in any way. The Moxa will used for 10 minutes.

Pregnancy Naturopathy

Unfortunately in this day and age, it is impossible to get all the nutrients we need from our diet alone and incorporating naturopathic advice, dietary changes and supplments into your routine is often required especially during pregnancy.

Many women think taking a pregnancy supplement with extra folate is all they need to do but its often not as simple as this. The baby will take everything is needs from its mother who simply needs to survive on whatever is left.

A woman’s body changes dramatically throughout pregnancy, as do her nutritional needs which means it’s important that she receives regular care so that supplements can be tailored throughout the pregnancy, and specific advice can be given at different stages.

What can it treat?

  • Morning sickness
  • Tiredness
  • Cravings
  • Cramps
  • Changes in bowel habits
  • Loss in concentration (‘Baby Brain’)
  • Heart burn
  • Indigestion
  • Water retention
  • Gestational diabetes
  • Pre-eclampsia

How many treatments will I need?

Throughout the 40 weeks of pregnancy, we recommend approximately 4 sessions. Sometime in the first trimester is great, ideally after you have received your blood test results from your GP, then at around 20 weeks, 30 weeks and finally at 36 weeks.

Birth Healing Hypnotherapy

It is a sad fact that around 30% of women report they are traumatised by their birth experience. Over 15% of women and 10% of men are diagnosed with post natal depression and 10% of women report symptoms of Post Traumtic Stress Disorder after their birth experience.

Preparing for the birth of a child mentally and physically takes time and effort. If this hasn’t happened, then often the above conditions can occur.

Luckily, Birth Trauma can be cleared and a parent can heal their experience, enjoy parenthood and even look forward to the next pregnancy and labour.

We have several qualified practitioners who can assist in this process.

How will it feel?

Your therapist will ask you to sit comfortably in a chair and close your eyes. They will then simply talk you into a very relaxed state. Your therapist will check that you are actually in trance and ensure that you are comfortable with the experience. Hypnosis is a pleasant, day-dreamy state. It’s a little like the feeling you have when you are gazing at an open fire place or a beautiful waterfall. Your body will probably be very relaxed but you will be more focused and aware than you normally are. You are always in control and you will normally remember what happens during the session although it may feel a little like a dream.

How many treatments will I need?

Most women will be able to heal their birth trauma in around 1-3 treatments. Depending on the specific details of the issue, it may be suggested that you continue treatment.

How can Craniosacral Therapy help in pregnancy?

  • It can help with many changes that the woman’s body is undergoing during pregnancy from things like morning sickness, headaches, back pain and sciatic pain.
  • A gentle and lovely opportunity to rest and deeply relax.
  • It’s great preparation for labour. It can help optimise the pelvis for birth and help calm the autonomic nervous system reducing the  need for adrenaline.
  • It also helps to sooth and balance bub whilst in utero.

Why is Craniosacral Therapy great for babies?

  • Birth involves a lot of effort from both mother & baby, and for some babies depending on their positioning it can cause some restrictions in the body and the tissue which can have many varied affects on their systems that they can take with them into adulthood if not addressed. Craniosacral Therapy can assist babies to release some of these restrictive patterns.
  • It helps to settle the nervous system, which in turn may help sleep patterns, feeding and settling etc.

Pregnancy Reflexology

Reflexology is a gentle and relaxing treatment based on the principle that reflexes on the feet, hands and ears reflect the whole body. These reflex points respond to gentle pressure, stimulating the body’s own natural healing processes resulting in improved overall health for you and your baby.

Your whole body benefits from reflexology during pregnancy and studies show that women who have regular reflexology treatments have shorter labours that those who don’t.
