What on Earth is Grounding?

I hope you’re making the most of the school holidays. It’s certainly quietened down at the beach as lots of campers packed up and went back to work this week. It’s also been very windy so I’m grateful that our campsite is in a fairly sheltered little hollow. It’s so lovely to be able to spend much of the day sitting in the sun and getting my Vitamin D levels up.  I’ve also been going my for long walks with my husband every day since I read Helen Mitas’s newly released book “Mindset Dominance”.  Helen is a fellow Hypnotherapist and her book is designed to inspire business professionals and executives to achieve their health and fitness goals. Before Christmas Helen’s book inspired me to start swimming a couple of times a week after just reading the back cover!  Now I’m walking for 40 minutes everyday. I set my phone timer for 20 minutes and keep walking until the timer goes off, then I turn around a walk back. At the moment I am covering about 5kms in that time. Today I walked along the foreshore in Geelong. It was gorgeous.  One of the many valuable tips in Helen’s book is about creating new habits that are non-negotiable and to have a compelling reason to change your habits. One of the things on my Bucket List is to walk from village to village in Italy and France at some point in the future. I decided I probably need to get fit and stay fit so I can achieve that goal. Helen’s book gave me the inspiration to get my butt off the camp chair and get started. My other non-negotiables are drinking at least 1.5 litres of water a day and eating an apple (or equivalent fruit) every day. If you need some inspiration and some great tips for reclaiming your health then you can get a copy of Helen’s book from our shop at Tunstall Square or order online HERE.   The other thing that I was reminded of this week was the benefits of Earthing. A client asked me if I knew anything about it and I actually told him that I have an Earthing (or Grounding) sheet on my bed. I also spend as much time as I can going barefoot and love being connected to nature and the Earth.  According to Biophysicist, James Oschman, “The moment your foot touches the Earth or you connect to the Earth through a wire, your physiology changes. An immediate normalization begins and an anti-inflammatory switch is turned on. People stay inflamed because they never connect to the Earth, the source of free electrons, which can neutralize the free radicals in the body that cause disease and cellular destruction.”   Did you know that every single disease known to man starts with inflammation at a cellular level? Inflammation is basically the result of too many free radicals causing destruction to healthy tissue. Free radicals are molecules that steal electrons from the surrounding tissue a bit like acid eating away at whatever it comes into contact with. Antioxidants have the ability to safely donate an electron to the free radicals and stop them damaging your cells or damaging your DNA. When the body has enough antioxidants, inflammation doesn’t occur.  Well, the free electrons that exist in nature work like antioxidants in the body.  We absorb these free electrons through our skin or by breathing them in.  These free electrons neutralise free radicals . When we have skin contact with the Earth by sitting, standing or walking barefoot, or if we touch a tree or put our bare hands on the ground we’re absorbing those free electrons and giving our body the ability to neutralise trillions of free radicals. Of course we will also get a big dose of these free electrons when we bath in water. I don’t mean in the shower or the bath but in nature.  Swimming in a river, lake or the ocean will give you a huge dose of free electrons.  My guess is that those Scandinavian cultures that have a custom of jumping into holes in the ice or rolling naked in the snow during winter (as crazy as it sounds) are actually Earthing themselves. This is probably why they discover that they feel much better afterwards.   “Civilized” societies are disconnected from nature and disconnected from this health giving energy source.  As I said a few weeks ago children who don’t spend time in nature are losing the ability to walk on uneven ground. Wearing shoes and walking on flat, artificial surfaces means they don’t develop the ability to stay balanced on irregular surfaces. The other issue, of course, is that artificial surfaces and rubber soled shoes prevent us connecting with the energy of the Earth. This is to the detriment of our health. The increased popularity of synthetic turf will only make this problem worse which concerns me.   So… my recommendations are:

  • Get those shoes off and connect with the Earth
  • Sit outside and put your bare feet on the grass at least once a day
  • Skinny dip in a lake, ocean or river. (OK wear your bathers if you must)
  • Get your hands dirty. Don’t use gloves for gardening.
  • Hug a tree
  • Get an Earthing Sheet for your bed. Keep grounded as you sleep. You can ORDER ONLINE HERE  (I recommend a Half Sheet so your feet and legs are grounded all night. The fabric is conductive and a wire connects to the Earth socket in a powerpoint.)
