One Powerful Way to Reduce Stress

How was your week?
Hopefully you enjoyed it. My husband and I had a big weekend house
hunting.  We’re currently renting and we found out a week ago that the
Landlord just sold the unit we’re in. We’ve just under 3 months to relocate.
I’ve warned my kids that they might get shared custody of us if we don’t find
somewhere else in time. Don’t you think a week with each child sounds fair?
We joked about moving in with them, arriving home at 6pm every night and
asking “What’s for dinner?”  I think they’re a bit worried
that we’re serious.

Anyway, since I teach “Stress to Serenity” I need to practice what I preach and
do what needs to be done with grace and ease. We’ve written down our vision of
the ideal property and told our Angels. We probably need to tell a few Real
Estate Agents as well I guess.  We did have a lovely day on Sunday looking
at blocks of land and display homes. I’ll let you know how we go. Keep your
fingers crossed for us. I guess, if need be, we can always hook up the caravan
and head North.

Now, one of the things I teach in the Stress to Serenity Course is to go with
the flow. The greatest source of stress is to resist what IS. When you judge
something that’s already occurring as wrong then you create a lot of tension
within yourself. If, however, you relax, accept what’s occurring and then
decide whether to take action or not you’ll feel much calmer and more
empowered. It’s also very powerful to assume that every cloud has a silver
lining, and to intentionally look for the gold in every situation.

I really like this story of a Chinese farmer who has mastered the art of
accepting what IS without judging it as good or bad. “The farmer had an
old horse for tilling his fields. One day the horse escaped into the hills and,
when all the farmer’s neighbours sympathised with the old man over his bad
luck, the farmer replied, ‘Bad luck? Good luck? Who knows?’

A week later the horse returned with a herd of wild horses from the hills and
this time the neighbours congratulated the farmer on his good luck. His reply
was, ‘Good luck? Bad luck? Who knows?’

Then, when the farmer’s son was attempting to tame one of the wild horses, he
fell off its back and broke his leg. Everyone thought this very bad luck. Not
the farmer, whose only reaction was, ‘Bad luck? Good luck? Who knows?’

Some weeks later the army marched into the village and conscripted every able-bodied
youth they found there. When they saw the farmer’s son with his broken leg they
let him off. Now was that good luck? Bad luck? Who knows?”

So of course the moral of the story is don’t be too quick to judge something as
good or bad. Why not try the “Art of Acceptance” for a week and watch your
stress dissolve instantly? Let me know how you go.
